Spiders follow their food. If you have a spider problem, what you actually have is an insect problem that spiders have noticed. That is why treating spiders alone gives you a few clear weeks and then the same webbing back in the same corners.
It also explains why pool cages and lanais are the worst spots on most Southwest Florida properties. Exterior lights draw insects, the enclosure traps them, and spiders set up where the food is. Which spiders actually matter here
Widow spiders are the ones with medical significance. Southern black widows are glossy black with the red hourglass underneath. Brown widows are tan to grey with a mottled pattern and an orange hourglass, and in much of Southwest Florida they are now more commonly encountered than black widows. Their egg sacs are the giveaway: brown widow sacs are covered in small spiky projections, unlike the smooth sacs of other species.
Both prefer undisturbed, sheltered spots close to the ground. Garages, sheds, under patio furniture and grills, inside irrigation and utility boxes, under railings and deck edges, and in the lower corners of screen enclosures. If you are reaching into any of those without looking, that is where bites happen. If you are bitten by a widow, seek medical attention.
Brown recluse spiders are not established in Florida. This is worth stating plainly because it comes up constantly. Occasional individuals turn up in shipped goods, but there is no established population here, and the great majority of suspected recluse bites in this state turn out to be something else entirely. Anyone quoting you for recluse treatment in Southwest Florida is selling you something you do not need.
Most of the rest are harmless and useful. Golden silk orb-weavers, the large yellow-and-black spiders that string webs between trees, are alarming to look at and entirely harmless. Spiny orb-weavers, the small white spiky ones in every Florida yard, are harmless. Jumping spiders, huntsman spiders and wolf spiders are harmless. All of them eat the insects you would rather not have.
Signs you have a spider problem
Webbing across screens and enclosure frames
Persistent webbing in pool cage corners, along screen frames and across enclosure doors. This is the most common spider complaint in Southwest Florida and it indicates a strong insect population inside the enclosure.
Egg sacs in sheltered corners
Round papery sacs tucked into corners, under furniture and inside boxes. Spiky, tufted sacs indicate brown widows and mean breeding on site rather than a wanderer.
Widows in garages, sheds and boxes
Irregular, tangled webbing low to the ground in undisturbed spots, often with a spider hidden at the edge. Check before reaching into stored items, meter boxes or under outdoor furniture.
More spiders indoors than usual
Spiders move in following prey. A sudden increase inside usually means the insect population inside has increased first, which is the thing worth investigating.

Inspection & Identification
A licensed technician identifies what you have and where it is harbouring, with particular attention to widow habitat: garages, sheds, utility and irrigation boxes, enclosure bases, under furniture and stored items. You get told plainly which species on your property are a concern and which are not.
Treatment & De-Webbing
We treat harborage areas and physically remove webbing and egg sacs, because leaving egg sacs behind means a new population in a few weeks. Screen enclosures get particular attention along frames, corners and door tracks where webbing accumulates.
Address the Food Source
This is the part that determines whether it holds. We treat the insect population the spiders are feeding on and identify what is drawing it in, most often exterior lighting near doors and enclosures. Switching those fixtures to warmer-toned bulbs, or moving them away from entry points, cuts insect attraction and takes the spider population down with it.

Frequently asked questions
Are there brown recluse spiders in Florida?
No established populations, no. Isolated individuals arrive occasionally in shipped goods, but Southwest Florida does not have a resident recluse population, and most suspected recluse bites here turn out to be something else. Widows are the spiders worth attention in this region.
How do I know if it is a widow?
Black widows are glossy black with a red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. Brown widows are mottled tan or grey with an orange hourglass. The clearest tell is the egg sac: brown widow sacs have small spiky projections all over, where other species produce smooth ones. If you find those, there is a breeding population on site.
Why is my pool cage covered in webs?
Because your exterior lights are drawing insects and the enclosure is trapping them, which makes it an excellent place to be a spider. Treatment plus de-webbing clears it, but the lasting fix involves the lighting and the insect population as much as the spiders themselves.
Are spider treatments safe around children and pets?
Yes, applied correctly and to label. Treatment concentrates on harborage areas rather than open living space, and surfaces are safe once dry. Your technician will give you the re-entry time before leaving.
Should I get rid of every spider?
We would not recommend it. Orb-weavers, jumping spiders and huntsman spiders are harmless and they eat mosquitoes, flies and roaches for you. The sensible approach is removing widows and clearing webbing where people actually go, while leaving the beneficial population alone. We will tell you which is which rather than treating everything.
