Roof rats and how they get in
The roof rat is the dominant rodent in Southwest Florida, and the name tells you where the problem is. They are excellent climbers and they live above ground rather than burrowing. Palm trees, mature canopy, fence lines, utility lines and trellises are all routes onto a roof, and once they are on the roof they only need one gap.
They are looking for somewhere dry, dark and undisturbed, which describes your attic precisely. Attic insulation makes ideal nesting material, and once established they contaminate it with droppings and urine.
The gaps they use are smaller than most people expect. A rat can pass through an opening about the size of a quarter, a mouse through one the size of a dime. The usual entry points here are soffit and fascia gaps, roof and ridge vents, gable vents, plumbing stack boots, dryer and bathroom vent terminations, air conditioning line penetrations, and the open eave line under barrel tile roofs.
Storm damage made all of this worse across the region. Roof and soffit repairs after Hurricane Ian opened gaps that in many cases were never fully closed, and we still find active rodent access on homes that were repaired years ago.
The damage is not just nuisance. Rodents gnaw continuously to manage their incisors, and electrical wiring, air conditioning ducts and plumbing lines are all fair game. Chewed wiring in an attic is a genuine fire risk. Contaminated insulation loses effectiveness and carries a persistent odour. Rodent droppings and urine also present a health concern, so cleanup is not a job to do casually.
Signs you have rodents
Scratching or running overhead at night
Scurrying, scratching or thumping in the ceiling after dark, usually most active in the first hours after sunset. This is the most common way people discover roof rats.
Droppings in the attic, garage or pantry
Dark, spindle-shaped droppings around a quarter to half an inch long. Fresh droppings are dark and soft, older ones grey and brittle, which tells you whether the activity is current.
Gnaw marks and rub marks
Chewed edges on soffit boards, wiring insulation, stored boxes or food packaging, plus dark greasy smears along beams, pipes and rafters where rodents travel the same route repeatedly.
Disturbed insulation and a persistent odour
Tunnelled or flattened attic insulation, nesting material, and an ammonia-like smell that does not clear. This indicates established occupation rather than a recent arrival.
Our rodent control and exclusion process
Inspection
A licensed technician inspects the attic and the full exterior, working the roofline, soffits, vents, penetrations and eave line to find every point of access. We also look at what is giving them a route onto the roof: overhanging branches, palms against the structure, fence lines and utility runs. You get told where they are getting in, specifically.
Removal
We trap and remove the population, monitoring until activity stops. Interior work uses traps rather than bait, deliberately, because a poisoned rodent that dies inside a wall void leaves you with an odour problem you cannot reach. Exterior control is handled separately with tamper-resistant stations where appropriate.
Exclusion & Prevention
Every identified entry point gets sealed with materials rodents cannot chew through. We advise on trimming branches and palms back from the roofline, since removing the route matters as much as closing the door. This step is what makes the result permanent, and it is included rather than quoted afterward.

Why do rats keep coming back after trapping?
Because trapping removes the occupants and leaves the entrance. Roof rats are not scarce in Southwest Florida, and an open soffit gap in an attic that already smells of previous occupation is an advertisement. Sealing the entry points is what ends the cycle, which is why exclusion is part of this service rather than an option.
How are they getting into my attic?
Almost always at the roofline. Soffit and fascia gaps, roof and ridge vents, gable vents, plumbing stack boots, dryer and bath vent terminations, AC line penetrations, and the open eave line under barrel tile roofs. A rat needs an opening about the size of a quarter. The inspection identifies yours specifically rather than guessing.
Do you use poison or traps?
Traps for interior work. Poison inside means rodents die inside, frequently in a wall void or above a ceiling where nobody can reach them, and the resulting odour lasts weeks. Exterior stations have their place around a property, but we are not going to solve your attic problem by creating a smell you cannot fix.
Do you seal the entry points, or do I need a contractor?
We seal them. Exclusion is part of the service and it is the part that determines whether the problem is solved or postponed. If something structural is beyond pest control scope, we will tell you plainly rather than seal around it.
Does my attic insulation need replacing?
Sometimes. Light activity often does not warrant it, but insulation heavily contaminated with droppings and urine loses performance and holds odour. We will assess it during the inspection and give you a straight answer rather than defaulting to the larger job.
